Early Outreach is critical.
Children growing up in low-income communities are six times more likely to drop out of high school than their higher income peers. What's more, only 9% of these children will graduate from college by the time they are 24. Therefore, we must give our students the tools they need to succeed at a much younger age.
One Bead partners with schools and after school organizations to run Youth Leadership Programs (YLPs) with students ranging from ages 7 to 14.
Each YLP is given a thousand-dollar service project grant and challenged to come up with a way to use that money to make a difference in their own community. While completing the projects, students develop a stronger sense of self-confidence and perseverance, which in turn influences the way they think about themselves and their future.
